Selenite: Your spring cleaning helper

This time of year, many of us are seized by the urge to clean up our spaces. With so many of us confined to our homes far more than we have been used to, this process started months ago for many. Of course spending all that time in our homes also has things feeling stuck and stagnant no matter how often we rearrange the furniture. One of the aspects of our spaces that is easily neglected is the energy of the space. While there are many ways to cleanse a space, one of the easiest and one of my personal favorites is to use Selenite.

What is Selenite?

Selenite is most often a milky white, translucent crystal made of the mineral gypsum found here in the United States and around the globe. While it can come in many colors and crystal shapes it is truly lovely when polished. Named after Greek Moon Goddess Selene, polished selenite has a luminosity that looks like captured moonlight.

What is Selenite useful for?

Selenite can be helpful in many ways but one of its super powers is to balance and clear energy. It can provide clarity of mind, helping to ease anxiety and discord and promote calmer sleep. It can also provide protection of a space from negative energies whether they are brought in by others or generated by events which happen there. By placing it in the four corners of a room, or as near to that as you can, selenite can help to hold and maintain a protected and calm space.

When and where should I use Selenite?

The first question you may be asking is “How do you know if a rooms energy needs cleaning?” Like stuck or stagnant energy in the body, problems can develop or accumulate slowly over time. They can be something of which we are not even consciously aware.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  • Are there places where you find arguments happen more frequently than others?

  • Are there spaces where you spend time with other people or where others pass through frequently (this most often happens in offices whether you work for yourself or for someone else)?

  • Are there spaces where more calm could be helpful to rest or relaxation?

Whether you are already someone who collects stones as helpers or if you are skeptical, the effects of selenite can be felt by those who don’t even know it is present. As a former scientist, I often encourage experimentation to find out what works specifically for you. Once you’ve tested something out, simply keep using what helps.

A great way to see if selenite can help you is to buy 4 pieces and place it in the four corners of a space where you want to shift the energy. I find offices, bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens are great places to start. Anyplace where conflict can crop up or where the energy of other people can have an impact on you. If you are in a cubicle or shared space, place it in the corners of your cubicle or desk. Then, observe to see if anything changes over the coming weeks.

Sometimes having a polished piece that you can carry with you can also be handy. Unpolished selenite has a tendency to splinter, so is not the best option if you want to be able to hold it in your hand. Not only in these crazy pandemic times, but also moving forward into whatever the new normal looks like, leaning on the many tools around us can provide that little bit of help just when we need it.
