Is acupuncture covered by My Insurance?

Some insurance companies are now covering acupuncture sessions. It is important to check with your policy on your specific coverage since not all plans offered by an insurer include acupuncture coverage.  If you have insurance that covers acupuncture for out of network providers, we will be happy to give you a payment receipt & insurance documentation form to submit to your insurer for reimbursement.

Here is a helpful series of questions to ask your insurer to determine if your policy covers acupuncture:

  • Does my plan cover acupuncture? If the answer to this is yes, then continue with the questions below.

  • Does the provider have to be In-Network or will my plan pay for an Out-of-Network provider?

  • Is a referral required for me to receive acupuncture treatment?

  • How many treatment sessions are covered by my plan?

  • Is there a co-pay or co-insurance? If so, how much?

  • Does my deductible have to be fulfilled before acupuncture treatments are covered?

  • Does my deductible need to be met before acupuncture treatments are covered?

  • Is there a limit on the number of treatments covered?

  • Are only specific conditions/medical codes covered by my plan?

While not all insurance plans cover the cost of acupuncture treatments, many employers offer Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) which allow employees to set aside pre-tax dollars into an account which may be used to pay for certain health care expenses. Acupuncture is an eligible expense under these plans and does not require a referral from a doctor in order to use FSA funds to pay for your treatments.

Synergy Acupuncture and Wellness is happy to be a member of the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care network.

As with most providers, not all Harvard Pilgrim plans cover acupuncture, so it is important to call and verify your coverage. We will also verify your coverage prior to billing them for any treatments.

Once your coverage has been verified, you will only need to pay your copay at the time of service. Copays so far have ranged from $20 to $50 per treatment. Once your copay has been paid, there is nothing more for you to do as HPHC will be billed directly.

Mass General Brigham Health Plan (formerly Allways Health Partners)

Synergy Acupuncture and Wellness is happy to be a member of the Mass General Brigham Health Plan (formerly Allways Health Partners) network.

As with most providers, not all Mass General Brigham Health (MGBH) plans cover acupuncture, so it is important to call and verify your coverage. We will also verify your coverage prior to billing them for any treatments.

Once your coverage has been verified, you will only need to pay your copay at the time of service. Once your copay has been paid, there is nothing more for you to do as MGBH will be billed directly.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (PPO and HMO Blue)

Synergy Acupuncture and Wellness is happy to be a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts network.

As with most insurers, not all BCBS MA plans cover acupuncture, so it is important to call and verify your coverage. We will also verify your coverage prior to billing them for any treatments.

Some BCBS MA plans do require a referral from your PCP in order to receive treatment, so it is important to check and if your plan requires one to submit it to your acupuncturist at the time of your first visit.

Once your coverage has been verified and any required referrals are received, you will only need to pay your copay at the time of service. Once your copay has been paid, there is nothing more for you to do as BCBS MA will be billed directly.
